How to check your Vanilla gift card balance

Vanilla does not print the balance anywhere, so you always check it online or by phone. It is free and takes less than a minute. This is exactly what the official checker looks like:

1

Go to the official checker

Open balance.vanillagift.com. You will see the manage your card form below. This is the only website where you should ever enter your card details.

2

Enter your card details

Type the 16 digit card number in field 1, then the expiration month, year and the CVV code from the back of your card in row 2. Enter the number without spaces.

Watch out for fake balance checkers. Search results for Vanilla balance are full of lookalike sites that steal card numbers. Only use balance.vanillagift.com or the official phone line 1-833-322-6760. This page will never ask for your card number, and no honest website will.

The one rule for Vanilla cards: your cart total, including shipping and tax, must stay at or below your balance. Most stores cannot split payments between two cards. Check your balance first, shop second.

At the checkout

How to use your Vanilla gift card online

Your Vanilla card is a prepaid Visa or Mastercard, so you pay with it exactly like a normal bank card.

1

Check your balance first

Know your exact balance before you shop. Your cart total, including shipping and tax, must stay at or below it.

2

Register your zip code

Some stores verify the billing address. Add a zip code to your card under manage card at vanillagift.com and use that zip at checkout.

3

Pay like a normal card

Choose credit or debit card at checkout and enter the card number, expiration date and security code. Done.

Know before you pay

Where your Vanilla card works, and where it struggles

The card runs on the Visa or Mastercard network, but a few payment situations trip prepaid cards up. Knowing them saves you a declined payment.

Works smoothly

  • Online shopping at practically every US webshop, from Amazon to Walmart to small stores
  • In store payments anywhere in the US that takes Visa or Mastercard
  • Food delivery and takeout apps and websites
  • Digital content such as ebooks, games, music and app stores
  • Gift card reloads like adding the exact leftover amount to your Amazon balance

Watch out

  • Gas pumps: the pump pre-authorizes up to $100 and can freeze that amount. Pay inside at the register instead
  • Hotels and car rentals: deposits can hold more than your balance, so the card is usually declined
  • Subscriptions and free trials: recurring billing on a shrinking balance fails sooner or later; many services block prepaid cards
  • Non US websites: Vanilla cards only work with US merchants and US billing addresses
  • Cash: no ATM withdrawals and no cash back, spending is the only way out
Troubleshooting

Vanilla balance check not working?

These are the most common problems and the fastest fixes.

The balance checker gives an error or will not load
Double check that you entered the card number without spaces and that the expiration date matches the front of the card. If you see a system error, wait a few minutes and try again. Still stuck? Call 1-833-322-6760 and use the automated system.
My card is declined even though I have enough balance
The usual cause is an address check: the store verifies a billing zip code and your card does not have one yet. Register a zip code at vanillagift.com under manage card and try again with that zip. Also make sure the cart total including shipping and tax does not exceed your balance, and check the watch out list for payment types that block prepaid cards.
My card is expired but there is still money on it
The funds on a Vanilla card do not expire, only the plastic card does. Call customer service and request a free replacement card for the remaining balance.
My card was never activated
Cards are activated at the register when they are bought. If yours does not work, the purchase receipt is the fastest way for customer service to fix the activation. Ask the gift giver for the receipt if needed.

Balance lower than expected? Act fast

Drained balances are the number one Vanilla complaint. Card numbers get skimmed in stores or phished through fake balance sites, and the thief spends the card before the owner does. If your balance is wrong, do this today:

  1. Open the transaction list in the official checker and note every purchase you did not make: date, amount and merchant.
  2. Call 1-833-322-6760 right away. Ask to block the card and open a dispute for the unauthorized transactions. The sooner you call, the stronger your case.
  3. Keep the card and the purchase receipt. Customer service will ask for the card number and proof of purchase, and a photo of both is usually enough.
  4. Expect a wait. Disputes can take several weeks. If you get no response, follow up in writing and mention a complaint to the CFPB, which regulates prepaid cards.

And from now on: check the balance the day you receive a card, spend it soon, and never enter the card number anywhere except the official site.

Frequently asked questions

Vanilla gift card FAQ

How do I check my Vanilla gift card balance?
Go to balance.vanillagift.com, the official checker from Vanilla, and enter your card number, expiration date and security code. Your balance and recent transactions appear instantly. You can also call 1-833-322-6760. Both options are free.
Where can I use a Vanilla gift card?
Almost everywhere. Vanilla cards run on the Visa or Mastercard network, so they work at nearly every online store and physical shop in the US that accepts those cards.
Can I use a Vanilla gift card on Amazon?
Yes. You can pay with it directly like any card, or reload your Amazon gift card balance with the exact amount left on your Vanilla card. The reload trick is the easiest way to use up a small remaining balance, and it also works for donations: many charities accept small online card payments.
How do I activate a Vanilla gift card?
Physical cards are activated automatically at the register when they are purchased, so a gifted card is normally ready to use. Digital eGift cards arrive activated by email. If a card does not work, the purchase receipt is what customer service needs to fix the activation.
What if my cart costs more than my balance?
Most online stores cannot split a payment between two cards, so the payment will simply fail. Keep your cart total, including shipping and tax, at or below your balance. Some stores do allow combining a gift card with another payment method; the checkout page will show it if so.
Does a Vanilla gift card expire?
The funds never expire. The date on the card is the expiration date of the plastic itself. If your card is past that date, request a free replacement for the remaining balance via customer service.
Can I use a Vanilla gift card outside the US?
No. Vanilla gift cards only work with merchants in the United States and with a US billing address. For online shopping, stick to US webshops.
Can I withdraw cash from a Vanilla gift card?
No. Vanilla gift cards are not debit cards and cannot be used at ATMs or for cash back. Spending the balance is the only way to use it.
